PhD student receives Google code funding for imaging project

David Pinto has been an enthusiastic participant in a number of open source software projects during his PhD studies co-supervised by Andrew Flaus and Kevin Sullivan.

One of David’s main contributions has been to the Octave language for image processing, which he has used extensively with light microscopy images in his project on the behaviour of histones in the nucleus. David is currently writing up his work, and has now received funding from the Google Summer of Code (GSoC) programme to help develop the Octave language to handle multidimensional (ND) images such as confocal stacks.

Dr. Sandra Cuffe recently won a poster prize for her poster entitled ‘Centrosome amplification as a strategy for radiosensitisation of prostate cancer’ at the Irish Association for Cancer Research Annual Meeting, (28th February – 1st March) Santry, Dublin. Dr Cuffe’s coauthors were Dr. David Gaboriau and Prof. Ciaran Morrison (CCB) and Dr. Enda O’Connell (NCBES).

… to Dr. Elaine Dunleavy, who was recently awarded the prestigious Wellcome Trust Research Career Development Fellowship. Elaine, a former graduate of NUI Galway, will join the CCB in June this year. She will conduct her research on how gametes (eggs and sperm) are produced, using the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster as a model system.
